ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION@#Young adults have always been considered to be susceptible to high-risk behaviors (HRBs),and parenting style has been theorized to infuence a young adult’s decision to engage in HRBs. Due to paucity of literature in the local context to ascertain this possible relationship, this study determined the association of permissive parenting style and HRBs among young Filipino adults. @*METHODS@#An analytical cross-sectional design was employed, and undergraduate students aged 19-24 years were recruited by convenience sampling. The Parental Authority Questionnaire and Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used to determine parenting style and HRB, respectively. Crude prevalence rate ratio (PRR) was determined at 95% confdence level.@*RESULTS@#Among mothers with permissive parenting, there was strong positive association with children’s HRBs for alcohol and drug use (PRR = 3.44; 95% CI 0.66, 18.03); sexual behavior (PRR = 1.27; 95% CI 0.46, 3.50); and diet/ food intake (PRR = 1.37; 95% CI 0.81, 2.33). Among fathers with permissive parenting, there was strong positive association with children’s HRBs for alcohol and drug use (PRR = 3.65; 95% CI 0.70, 19.11); and diet/ food intake (PRR = 1.18; 95% CI 0.70, 2.01). However, none of these association met statistical signifcance (p-value > 0.05). @*CONCLUSION@#Permissive parenting style may infuence future HRBs of biological children, and this might be an area of concern in terms of counseling interventions to improve on family dynamics and relationship.

ABSTRACT

@# Objective To understand the awareness of AIDS related knowledge, high risk behaviors, the infection status of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2, and to explore the associated factors with HSV-2 infection among whoremasters in Kaiyuan City, so as to provide scientific evidence for targeted intervention to prevent and control HIV and other STDs. Methods A self-designed questionnaire survey was conducted among whoremasters recruited through outreach activities and snowball sampling. The blood and urine were also collected for corresponding laboratory examination. Results Among the whoremasters, 98.22% had a high awareness of AIDS related knowledge, 9.33% once used drugs, and 14.67% did not use a condom during the latest commercial sex. 62.22% of the whoremasters ever had non-marital sex partners, and of those who had sex with non-marital sex partners in the past year, 59.55% reported using condoms inconsistently. The total infection rate of HIV/syphilis/HSV-2 was 18.22% and the infection rates of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 were 3.11%, 1.33% and 16.44%, respectively. The older whoremasters were more likely to have a higher HSV-2 infection rate (AOR=1.044,95%CI:1.016-1.073,P=0.002), and those whoremasters not using a condom during the latest commercial sex were more likely to have a higher HSV-2 infection rate (AOR=3.125,95%CI:1.229-7.945,P=0.017). Conclusions Though whoremasters in Kaiyuan City had a high awareness of AIDS related knowledge, they had high-risk behaviors and relatively high HIV and other STDs infection rates. Targeted interventions are needed to improve the risk awareness of STDs infection to promote consistent condom use in both commercial and non-marital sexual behaviors among whoremasters.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] To investigate the awareness rate of AIDS and STDs related knowledge, the epidemic features of high-risk behaviors and related risk factors among pregnant women in a sentinel hospital of Liangxi District of Wuxi City. [Methods]The pregnant women who built health care manual or accepted pregnancy health care from April to June in every year during 2010-2015 were investigated.[Results]Of more than 2 400 pregnant women investigated, the infection rates of HIV, syphilis, and HCV were 0.04%, 0.46% and 0.25%. The awareness rate of knowledge was 85.79%. But, the understanding of AIDS was not scientific and comprehensive. [Conclusion]The infection rates of HIV and other STDs were observed at low levels among pregnant women in the sentinel hospital of Liangxi District. But, some still had high-risk behaviors. The mastery degree of the knowledge of AIDS prevention and control were not comprehensive. Policy advocacy, health education, voluntary consultation test and many other prevention and control strategies must extend the coverage from high risk groups to pregnant women and many other general population. Intensive education about AIDS should be carried out to help people have a correct and scientific understanding of AIDS.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To survey the knowledge, attitude and behavior about HIV/AIDS among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the main districts of Chongqing and to analyze the current status and demand on HIV/AIDS control in the districts. Methods: Questionnaire survey was conducted among MSM, and qualitative interviews of MSM and some key informants, including the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) staff, volunteers and the owners of bars or public bathrooms were done. Results: About 80% of MSM were younger than 30 years old and were unmarried. More than half of MSM had college degree or above. Most of them were students, office staff and entertainment staff, and about 25% of them were bisexual. Television and newspapers were the main pathways to obtain knowledge on HIV/AIDS; friends, free publicity materials, internet and consulting services were also ways to obtain related knowledge. It was found that in the recent six months, 6.5%(50/772) of MSM sold and 3.9%(30/772) bought sexual services, and about 17.1% (132/772) MSM had sex with women in the recent six months. The rates of condom use among MSM when having sex with men and women at every intercourse were 41.9%(271/647) and 29.5%(39/132), respectively. And 82.0%(633/772) of them had intervention service. MSM suggested that their privacy should be fully protected during the intervention, more attractive publicity materials should be provided, and more knowledge was needed on other sex transmitted diseases; the intervention ways should be diversified; and they needed the consultation of professional. The volunteers required more training and independent offices. The owners of entertainment argued that more efforts should be made to encourage the entertainment workers to promote intervention. Conclusion: MSM in the main district of Chongqing have many high risk factors of HIV/AIDS. Though various interventions have been given and some achievement has been made, more efforts are needed to protect the privacy of MSM population and to improve the intervention. And efforts should also be made to promote the initiation of the volunteers, entertainment owners and staff.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the situation of AIDS-related high risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM) ever experienced partner-seeking in different sites. Methods Target sampling for cross-sectional study ( "snowball" ) and valid anonymous questionnaires were adopted to compare the differences of high risk behaviors related to AIDS. 1834 MSM were studied in nine cities who sought sex partners through internet, bars or bath ponds. Results Compared to the other corresponding groups, those MSM from the bath pond group had a significant larger number of total sexual partners, chances of having anal and oral sex with same sex, and ones of anal sex in the previous six months with the median number as 40, 16, 20 and 4 respectively. Interact group had a higher rate of bleeding (36.4%) when having sexual intercourse in the previous year and a lower proportion of 8.7% exchanged sex for money, and 14.9% and 13.3% in both bar and bath pond groups respectively. Bar group had significant lower rates of condom use with 79.6% while having sex with men and 45.3% with women, but higher rates(28.9% ) ever participated in group sex in the last year and 4.2% with H1V infection. Conclusion MSM had high risk behaviors related to AIDS appeared in different sites when seeking partners. Intervention strategy should be taken, according to the characteristics of different subpopulations, especially on the bath pond group.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the AIDS-related high risk behaviors of men who havesex with men (MSM) who ever exchanged money for the same sex. Methods Target sampling forcross-sectional study and valid anonymous questionnaires were adopted to compare the differences ofAIDS-related high risk behaviors between MSM with the experience of exchanging money for thesame sex and those without that experience. 1959 rstadied samples were recruited in nine cities. SPSS13.0 was used and t, x 2 and Mann-Whitney tests were taken for statistical analysis. ResultsCompared to corresponding ones without "buying" the same sex experience, MSM who ever engagedin "buying" sex had the characteristics of being prone to in marriage and living in larger cities witholder age and higher income (P<0.01). They also had a significant larger number in the followingevents: total sexual panners, anal sex and oral sex episodes with same sex, number of sexualpartners, anal sex and oral sex in the previous six months, with the figure of median 50.0, 20.0,20.0, 5.0,4.0,5.0 respectively. 31.5% had ever participated in 'group sex', 48.0% had sex with malepartners away from his own region in the previous year, 70.5% had sexual intercourse withstrangers at MSM avenues in the last six months. The OR (95% CI) values were 2.288( 1.702-3.077), 3.231 (2.462-4.241 ), 2.840 (2.140-3.770). All the above mentioned figures werehigher than those without the experience, with significant differences. They had a significant lower rate of 45.7% of condom use while having sex with female partners (P<0.05). Conclusion MSM with the experience of exchanging money for the same sex would have more AIDS-related high risk behaviors, AIDS preventative measures should be taken to target different subgroups.
